Our Parliament

Did you know a group of owls is called a parliament? Our parliament is made up of four book-loving, twenty-something librarian owls blogging from the midwest.

Madeleine

At age twelve, Madeleine’s life goal was to become a hermit in the woods and write books for a living.  While she no longer actively pursuing a career as a professional recluse, her love of a good story hasn’t diminished.  In fact, the opposite is true today. Madeleine often dreams of traveling, but her wingspan and pocketbook make armchair travel the only current option.

Madeleine reads widely and enjoys everything from literary fiction and classics, global lit, fantasy, historical fiction, and a bit of crime fiction interspersed with some young adult and middle grade fiction. She’s especially fond of books that seem real with a twist of fantasy, use time travel, touch on themes of social justice, or weave together seemingly unconnected characters and plot lines.

On the other hand, one of her biggest book pet peeves is the dreaded love triangle. In
fact, Madeleine has been thinking of starting an anti-love-triangle club. Anyone want to join?

Madeleine changes her mind on her favorite books about once a week, but if you forced her to choose favorites, she’d pick:

When not reading or working at her library, Madeleine enjoys baking, wasting too much time on the Internet, running flying, and spending time with her friends and younger sisters.

Nox

When Nox was a baby owl her favorite bedtime story was the story of Prometheus. And not the bringing light to humanity part. No, her favorite part was that after he was caught, Zeus had him chained to a rock and every day an eagle came and ate out his liver, which grew back at night because he was a Titan and apparently they're like starfish with the regeneration. After growing up and getting her degree in liberal-artsy English and Classics, she spends most of her time in libraries. Her taste in books varies. If someone dies horrifically in the first chapter of the book, Nox'll probably love it. Seriously, people keep coming up more and more creative ways to kill people and she loves them all. Or if the plot involves an angsty too-smart-for-her-age teenage girl, consider it read.

Her Top Five all-time favorite books are:
When she's not reading, she's usually eating, or actively not exercising, or watching way too much tv. Luckily her friends have spent enough time with her that when she says "You know that guy who was in that one thing with the girl who was in that movie with whats-his-face. He's awesome." They know exactly who she means.

Sonya

Sonya is a sweet owl. When she's not reading, working, or watching TV, she might be found baking adorable (and delicious) cupcakes or making handmade cards for her friends and family. While in college, Sonya clearly couldn't decide what to study; she has majors in English literature, mathematics (yes, math!), and Spanish. She even got to spend a semester in Mexico.

Sonya likes to read a lot of different things, but especially likes middle grade fiction, young adult lit, some sci-fi/fantasy, and the classics. Sonya's favorite books include:

Sonya doesn't tweet, but her friend Leroy the Cat does. If you speak fluent cat, be sure to follow @LeroyKubas!

Zelda

Zelda may be the smallest owl, but her beautiful magenta plumage guarantees she'll always stand out in a crowd! She's also been known to dye her feathers different colors, but the pink is her favorite. Zelda makes friends easily and has adopted all sorts of pets into her home. Her family currently includes a cat named after Darth Vader and a dog named after a Norse god.

Zelda favorite types of books are young adult fiction and thrillers. Like Nox, she thinks the more twisted the story, the better. Zelda also judges books by their covers without shame. And if she had to choose a fictional character to marry, she'd chose Alex Cross.

Zelda's favorite books include:
Besides reading, Zelda has a weak spot for television and movies that are so bad, they're good. Of the group, she's the best at filling in the blanks when Nox says, "You know that guy who was in that one thing with the girl who was in that movie with whats-his-face. He's awesome." And if you're daring, be sure to challenge her to a Harry Potter trivia contest (just don't get her started on Ron/Hermione relationship or the epilogue)!
